Olympic Study Day 2026: Skateboarding Between Lifestyle and Competitive Sport
On July 9, the Willibald Gebhardt Institute (WGI), in cooperation with the Department of Education and Culture in Sport at the Institute of Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Münster, hosted a panel discussion on the topic “Skateboarding and the Olympics: Lifestyle or Competitive Sport?” as part of the Olympic Study Day 2026. The panel featured well-known stakeholders from the skateboarding scene: Skateboarding pioneer Titus Dittmann (Skate-Aid), Hans-Jürgen “Cola” Kuhn (education policy expert and former chair of the Skateboarding Commission), and Julius Dittman (CEO of Titus) discussed the evolution of skateboarding between DIY (do-it-yourself) and the Olympics, including the associated rules, standards, and commercialization.
While the panelists emphasized the athletic aspects, various quick polls of the audience revealed that the roughly 100 guests, listeners, and students tended to associate skateboarding with a specific, nonconformist lifestyle. The evolution of this unique sport—set to return to the Olympic program in 2028—remains fascinating. Since skateboarding—selected by the organizers as a demonstration sport in Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024—will also be part of the program in Los Angeles in 2028, it will be considered an “incumbent discipline” of the Olympic Games beyond LA 2028.
The discussion was supported by short video clips featuring voices from the streets of Münster, recorded not only—but also—in local skateparks. “A very successful event on an exciting topic in the context of the Olympics,” concluded WGI President Heinz Aschebrock. Helga Leineweber, Vice President of Olympic Sports at the WGI, was also delighted with the enthusiastic response and Kai Reinhart’s excellent moderation of the panel.
As part of the Olympic Study Day’s supporting program, attendees were able to use a mobile mini–ramp to get a feel for skateboarding for themselves following the panel discussion. Trying it out in practice, they realized that, in addition to technique, it also takes quite a bit of courage.
