WGI Fellow Prof. Dr. Antonin Rychtecky dies in Prague due to Covid 19 infection
As the WGI only learned in the last few days, our friend and WGI Fellow from the Czech Republic, Prof. Antonin Rychtecky, has passed away. The WGI had been working with him for 25 years in numerous joint bilateral and international research projects on youth sports in Europe and on Olympic education in school sports.
Until his retirement, Prof. Rychtecky held a full professorship at the Charles University in Prague in the Faculty of Sports Science and Sports, Department of Sports Education and Sports Psychology. For many years he was a member of the Czech Olympic Committee and chairman of the Czech Olympic Academy. He taught regularly at the International Olympic Academy in Olympia. His academic vita comprises over 200 publications in German, English, Russian and Czech, including two international book publications as co-author and co-editor on the Olympic ideals of young people in Europe and a worldwide review on Olympic education. For many years he was an editor on the board of the magazines “Acta Universitatis Carolinae – Kinanthropologica” and “Ceska Kinathropolica”. At the European level, he was a member of numerous research consortia linked to commissioned studies for the European Union (Working Group of Sport and Health, COMPASS; Study on Young People’s Lifestyle and Sedentariness; VOCAsport, ARCTOS, AEHSIS).
With Antonin Rychtecky, the WGI has lost an internationally outstanding scientist, long-term partner and researcher in European children, youth and school sports. In honor and in memory of his academic work, there will be a special lecture at the CEREPS Summit 2021 in Bratislava. The WGI mourns Antonin Rychtecky and expresses its condolences to his family. We will not forget Antonin.
