After recent reaccreditation WGI celebrates 10 year anniversary as Olympic Study Centre

In 2011, while still at the University of Duisburg-Essen, the Willibald Gebhardt Institute was accredited for the first time by the International Olympic Study Center of the IOC in Lausanne as a national Olympic Study Centre. To keep this status, verification measures were repeatedly necessary, which were successfully completed for the first time in 2014 and then in Münster in 2017.

In May 2020, the criteria for the Olympic Study Centers were tightened worldwide, so that a further review and reaccreditation was due for the WGI. From 2021, only those study centers should be recognized by the IOC that are academically connected to universities in their home countries and that can also prove their accreditation via the National Olympic Committee.

Shortly before the end of the year, the WGI received the necessary support letter from the German Olympic Sports Confederation and immediately submitted it to Lausanne with all other documents. The President of the WGI, Heinz Aschebrock, received the reaccreditation letter from Lausanne a few days ago under the new conditions of the IOC. The WGI has now been an Olympic Study Center for ten years.
